Diamond markets driven by last-minute Christmas orders and preparations for Chinese New Year. US retail sentiment gets boost from economic growth, pending tax cuts and record-high stock market (Dow at 24,666). Cost of credit rising as Fed hikes interest rates 0.25 points based on positive job-market outlook. Polished inventory reduced due to holiday demand and low availability of new manufactured goods. Synthetics, tight bank credit and manufacturing profit among biggest concerns for 2018. Rough market stable at $450M Dec. sight. De Beers 2017 estimated rough sales -5% to $5.3B. Belgium Nov. polished exports +11% to $971M, rough imports -13% to $986M.

Fancies: Curved fancy shapes in good demand. Ovals are strongest category, followed by Pears and Cushions. Some squares — Emerald and Radiant — are okay, but Princesses still weak. Oversizes selling well. Steady demand for fine-quality 6 to 10 ct. Ovals, Pears and Emeralds, with limited supply. US demand supporting market for commercial-quality, medium-priced fancies under 1 ct. Far East demand improving as consumers seek fancy shapes at better prices. Off-make, poorly cut fancies illiquid and hard to sell, even at very deep discounts.

United States: Positive sentiment as Christmas approaches. Suppliers sending goods on short-term memo to stimulate deals. Steady demand for 1 to 2.5 ct., G-I, VS-SI diamonds. Large volume of lower-quality milky goods available at higher discounts. Good demand for eye-clean SIs. Jewelers expecting better holiday season than last year.

Belgium: Trade slowing before the Christmas break. Dealers offering higher discounts on lower-quality goods, as they don’t want to hold inventory over the holiday period. Steady demand for 0.30 to 1 ct., F-H, VS-SI diamonds. Rising interest in fancy color and fancy shape diamonds. Dealers concerned about impact of online buying.

Israel: Stable market with steady orders from the US and Hong Kong. Inter-dealer trading slowing. Improving demand for 1.01 to 1.08 ct., D, IF and 1.01 to 1.08 ct., G, VS2 diamonds. Buyers looking for better-quality polished, which is in short supply. Rough trading consistent, with slightly better margins on the secondary market.

India: Positive sentiment despite sluggish polished trading. Manufacturers maintaining low production until end of the year. Improved melee demand in 4Q. Rough trading steady, with slightly better margins on the dealer market, but manufacturing profit squeezed.

Hong Kong: Polished trading stable, with large retailers stocking up for Chinese New Year (Feb. 16). Rising expectations for the season amid improved consumer sentiment. Good demand for 1 ct., D-H, VS-SI, RapSpec A2+ diamonds. Dossiers steady. China better than Hong Kong, as Chinese consumers and tourists shift focus to local spending

Israel: Polished trading stable, despite slight slowdown during Hanukkah. Dealers satisfied with US and Chinese holiday sales. RapNet launched a new site on Tuesday, promising a safer, simpler and smarter way of trading diamonds online.

The aspects of RapNet that users enjoy will stay, but the redesigned platform will be easier to navigate, getting those users to their desired diamonds with fewer clicks. There are also handy tools such as a price calculator, the ability to compare up to 10 diamonds at once, and on-screen filtering of search results.

The new site is built on technology that will make it easier to add more features should RapNet choose to introduce them — such as improvements to money-transfer methods and supply-chain traceability.

Crucially, it will be harder to defraud users, explained RapNet chief operating officer Saville Stern (pictured). Traders will be able to communicate using an on-site messaging service, rather than having to exchange emails — an increasingly common target for fraudsters trying to fool people with fake correspondence.

“It’s a safer and easier way to find things, and it looks nicer,” said Stern. “It’s the same RapNet you know, but an easier platform to use, more secure, and built for what’s next.”

Users’ RapNet inboxes will also be simpler for them to search, and will be centralized — meaning traders won’t have to juggle several communication methods, such as email, Skype and WhatsApp. Additionally, the platform will organize messages into threads, conveniently grouping parts of the same conversation together.

RAPAPORT ...

HRD Investigates Possible Inappropriate Conduct

RAPAPORT... Sources from the Hoge Raad voor Diamant (HRD) confirmed that four gemologists were asked to resign this week and that an internal investigation is currently being carried out. An official statement released today stated that the graders left ''due to elements that have triggered an immediate internal, ongoing investigation concerning possible inappropriate conduct.''

Rumors have been swirling in Antwerp that the four in question were actively involved in bribery concerning the valuation of an undisclosed number of diamonds. Reportedly, five diamond firms could have been directly involved in the issue.

Georges Brys, the director of HRD Antwerp Lab, explained to Rapaport News, ''Contrarily to what may have been said in the press, the police aren’t at all part of our internal investigation, they aren’t involved yet at this stage. Obviously we questioned our legal department, but we must assess the situation, and then inform our board and the ISO committee. It’s only after those actions, that we’ll be able to take all necessary measures. We can‘t just fire people without informing the unions and giving them a sound motive.''

Brys concluded, ''I must insist that so far, all we have against our former graders is that they made a professional mistake. We have nothing to hide, and we’re not trying to hide anything. All we’re doing is making sure we know the circumstances and the facts.''
